I graduated from the University of Hard Knocks. When I was four years old, I punched the paper boy in the groin and knocked him down on his knees- that’s when my parents knew they had something special on their hands. At 5, I jumped into a swimming pool where I almost drown. My dad jumped in to save me. At 6, I broke my skull all the way from my right eyebrow to the back of my ear when I fell head first from the top of a 10 ft slide I was playing on. (MRIs looked good by the way.) Back then I thought I could fly like Michael Jordan.

With a 2” vertical leap, I wasn’t going anywhere. At 10, I broke my nose diving face first into a pool of three feet of water. I never had any training or lessons of any kind in life, so I learned the hard way. At 13, I started to smoke marijuana and hang out with the big boys. During that time I started shoplifting, going into convenience stores and stealing chocolates (I loved Kit-Kats) — not a good start in life. At 14, my 6’ 2” 220-pound math teacher beat me up for getting on his nerves.

He did it in front of the school faculty, and no one stopped it. (By the way, it was my fault I got beat up- they blamed me.) The teacher later retired with honors and had a huge retirement party. But I kept moving forward with my life, not giving up. At 15, I got attacked by a child molester out in the desert- he was an older man who hung around with my brothers friends. Luckily, I was able to get away, but not before I punched him right in the face. At 17, I ran away from home and went to live in Mexico for a short time.

I clearly remember because that’s when I ate 17 carne asada tacos and three sodas while staying at my friend’s house in Mexico. The same year, I dropped out of high school and started hanging out on the streets full time. At 18, I was falsely accused of aggravated assault and arrested. For a crime, I did not commit. Luckily, I wasn’t charged, but the damage was done (wrong place, wrong time). That same year I met the woman of my dreams, Yvonne. I still remember when I first met her. It was love at first sight, and she was crazy enough to take this 20-year journey with me.

At 19 years old/young, I married her and had two wonderful kids, Joe, and Ivanna. At 23, I was arrested for possession and sale of a controlled substance, selling to an undercover cop. At 28, I was arrested for DUI while drinking some beers after work. I was the passenger in the car but started driving because my so-called friend could not drive since he was intoxicated. I thought I learned my lesson.

At age 30, I was the campaign manager when my dad decided to run for city council. The same year, I was the parks and recreation commissioner for the City of Calexico. At 33, I lost my home, job, income property and filed for bankruptcy. At the age of 34, I had a nervous breakdown and was thinking about suicide. At 35, I was arrested in a sting operation in Orange County, CA for advertising a business without a contractor’s license — always taking a risk and trying to shortcut everything.

At the age of 38, I was homeless with a family of four. We were living in a hotel called Vagabond until I ran out of money, and then moved to a friend’s living room floor. Around the same time, I started seeing a counselor for help with my depression and anxiety symptoms while on the brink of a divorce. During this crazy life journey, I happened to work in 25 jobs in 20 years. In 7 years, I lived in four different counties and lived in 12 different places. Perseverance, faith and not giving up have been the keys to making it through life’s obstacles.

This book is about the 25 jobs I’ve had and also about never giving up on my dream. No matter what past you have had, anything is possible if you believe.
